Billing Gazette release :
The world breathed a sigh of relief last week when "spam king" Robert Alan Soloway was arrested in Seattle.
The sigh was replaced by a groan when it was pointed out that junk e-mail messages were still flooding the world's computers at the rate of about 70 billion a day - the same as before his arrest.
It turns out that the war on spam has as much chance of success as the war on drugs. In the war on drugs we regularly hear that a certain "kingpin" has been arrested, which temporarily puts a tiny dent in the influx of heroin, cocaine or marijuana, until 10 or 15 people step up to take the kingpin's place. The kingpin is dead, long live the kingpin.
Still, there is some psychological benefit to the arrest of spam kings and drug kingpins. We all want to believe that a few people will be punished for wrecking so many lives, for jamming so many inboxes.
